Working on Holland's Room {Bolster Pillows}

Shortly before we moved from Richmond, I picked up a pair of vintage upholstered beds from my beloved Alexander's Antiques Auction.  Often times, when the word 'vintage' is paired with upholstery, one needs to be prepared for some stripping off of the old to make way for the new.  In this case though, the fabric was in pretty good condition (and it smelled fine :), and I actually really liked it, so it stayed.

I added duvet covers from Ikea and happened to come across two packages of sheets that worked with the colors on one of my weekly trips to T.J. Maxx.   For a while I thought I would add a small lumbar pillow to the mix since I already had the inserts (I literally stock up on down/feather pillow inserts when I come across them for a couple bucks a piece at thrift stores!).  Then, a trip to Tuesday Morning (apparently I have a thing for discount retail stores)  revealed several huge bolster pillow inserts.  At this point, I knew my plans had to change because I had to make room for these fabulous bolsters in my house!

Now I need to decide how to dress the bolsters.  I really don't want this to be one of those projects that never gets done.  I don't want to look at the insert for the next several months.  I want to get 'er done.  (This desire for quick project completion may mean that I farm the sewing of these suckers out to a professional, but we shall see.)

I've been collecting inspiration to help me decide what I want to do with the bolsters, and I would so love your input!

Darling girl's room by Ruthie Sommers, note the pair of bolsters.

Fun contrasting ribbon (tape?) on bolsters in the most precious twin sister's room .  Their mama designed the room and she is crazy talented!  Did I mention she has twin daughters and triplet sons?!?!

Bolsters and monograms? Oh me Oh my!

I really think I'd like to monogram them, so that helps narrow down fabric choices a bit.  While I could monogram on top of a print, I'm inclined to think a solid fabric could be a nice addition here.  What do you think?

I got a color card in the mail from Gray Line Linen, and they have some really beautiful colors (and their prices are fantastic! 100% linen for less than $10/yd!)  Perhaps these photos will help us :)

I like the idea of doing a strong pink (perhaps the coral above? or even the fuchsia?), but I also like a green maybe?  Sorry for all the indecisiveness and the unbridled use of question marks in this post, but this is really what is going through my head :)

I was thinking of doing the monogram in white to keep things clean and from going too matchy.  Something along the lines of this, but probably a different style monogram (though this one is fun!)

I could always scrap the idea of a solid and bring in some classic check.

I'm a little concerned that this could read a little flat since the tones are so similar to the rest of the bedding.

I have some of this yellow check on hand.  In a previous life it was used as a tablecloth, but there's no reason it can't be reinvented on pillows. There is some yellow in the sheets and a bit in the headboards...

So, what do you all think?  Solid or print?  What color would you choose?

  4. Hello new IG friend! I LOVE the idea of doing a monogram on the bolster! But...I'm pretty much a fan of a monogram on anything! All of these inspiration ideas are beautiful...I can't wait to see the final room! I'm in the process of doing my daughter's big girl room, she's still in a crib but quickly outgrowing it. I am having a bedskirt and shams made from yellow and white buffalo check...looks just like that fabric :} Now I've just got to work up the nerve to sew her curtains...
